I will only load six rounds into an Officer size standard length tube even if it's adertised as being able to hold seven. I will only load seven rounds into a standard length tube even if it's advertised as being able to hold eight. These magazines will have longer than standard tubes to allow the springs to fully compress without stacking.
I only load eight rounds in magazines that are designed from the ground up to hold eight rounds. When installed in a standard length tube and with 8 rounds loaded there's not enough room left to allow the follower to be pushed further down into the mag before the legs contact the bottom and prevent the mag from locking in place. I believe the Checkmate patented follower shown in the 2nd post in this thread is best used in an extended tube magazine. Can you load seven rounds into one of the problem Colt mags with a Checkmate follower installed and lock the mag in place in all pistols with the slide forward? Colt magazine in which I had installed a Checkmate 8-round follower. If anybody has suggestions, I would be grateful. Perhaps there is some crud at the bottom which limits the follower's travel. My next move will be to disassemble the magazine and clean it thoroughly. In most of the other pistols it seated 50% or so. Then I tried it in all of my 1911s with the action closed. It worked 100%, just as it had been doing at the range for months since I installed the Checkmate follower. I had not done a magazine swap with the action closed even once since the prior year's qualification.Īt home I tried seating that loaded magazine with the action open. I swapped it for another and finished qualifying with no problem. The problem was that magazine wouldn't seat in my Kimber in repeated tries at the range.

That took me right into a "tap-rack-bang" situation because the full Colt magazine didn't seat in my Kimber. Last week when doing my LEOSA qualification there was a moment when it occurred to me that I probably only had 1 or 2 rounds left in the mag, so I replaced it with a Colt magazine in which I had installed a Checkmate 8-round follower some months prior.
But then, in my practices I had not been doing a "tactical reload", aka "in-battery magazine exchange". Until last week I was having 100% performance from Checkmate followers.
